SAMBOUK (Golfe d’Aden)

Faisant partie de la grande famille des "boutres", ce voilier typique de la Péninsule Arabique, est utilisé tant pour la pêche que pour le transport de marchandises en cabotage le long des côtes de l'Afrique orientale. Certaines caractéristiques de la coque permettent de faire remonter les origines du sambouk à ces navires Portugais qui, à partir du XVe siècle, après avoir contourné le continent Africain, remontaient le long des côtes méridionales de l'Asie. Au début du XXe siècle encore, des sambouk, armés de pièces de différents calibres, s'adonnaient à la contrebande et à la traite des esclaves destinés aux marchés du Moyen-Orient. Pour combattre ces commerces illicites, la Marine de guerre Italienne avait, durant l'occupation coloniale, armé les sambouk Antilope, Camoscio, Capriolo, Cervo, Daino, Gazzella et Zébra de canons de 37 mm. Ces bateaux de 60 à 70 tonneaux de jauge, et dont les équipages d’une vingtaine d'homme étaient composés d'indigènes et d'officiers de la marine Italienne, furent les derniers navires de guerre naviguant uniquement à la voile. De nos jours, ces voiliers, très nombreux il y a encore quelques décennies, ne se retrouvent plus guère qu'en mer Rouge, dans les eaux d'Aden et dans le Golfe Persique, où ils sont utilisés à la pêche aux huîtres perlières. Motorisés, et le plus souvent sans voilure, ils sont maintenant plus connus sous le vocable anglais de ‘DHOWS’ et servent surtout aux transports.

SAMBUK (Gulf of Aden)

Forming part of the great family of the "boutres", this typical sailing ship of the Arabic Peninsula, is used as well for fishing as for the carriage of goods in the coastal traffic along the coasts of Eastern Africa. Certain characteristics of the hull make it possible to make go up the origins of the sambuk to these Portuguese ships which, starting from 15th century, after having sailed round the African continent, went up along the southernmost coasts of Asia. Even to the beginning of the 20th century, sambuk armed with parts of various guns, were devoted to the smuggling and the trade of the slaves intended for the markets of the Middle East. To repress these illicit trade, the Italian Navy, during the colonial occupation, had armed the sambuk Antilope, Camoscio, Capriolo, Cervo, Daino, Gazzella and Zebra with guns of 37 mm. These boats from 60 to 70 tons, and of which the crews of twenty men were composed of natives and Italians officers, were the last warships sailing only with sails. Nowadays, these sailing ships, very widespread still a few decades ago, are found hardly than at Red sea, in water of Aden and the Persian Gulf, where they are used to fish pearl-bearing oysters. Motorized and generally without sails, they are now more known under the English term of "DHOWS".
